Protecting Edits in the Hub

Protecting Edits in the Hub

Data backup & protection whilst editing

Sometimes you may have done many edits on an inspection, or entered a lot of data on a new one, and then accidentally closed the browser / tab, or hit the 'Back' button. You think you have lost all your hard work...

However, the Clarinspect web app keeps a record for half an hour of your last changes if it detects that you have not saved your work.

This guide will take you through the intricacies of navigating through the hub with scenarios where you may have accidentally forgotten to save inspections, or lost the page, and how you can restore your data.

Basic rule:

Whatever you were doing before you lost the data...

...do it again and you'll have that session restored

Hub navigation vs. browser navigation

Browser Navigation in this guide refers to the navigation provided by web browsers (chrome, safari, etc). The Clarinspect web application is accessed via a web browser. The browser is not a Clarinspect product. Examples of web browsers are Chrome, Safari and Microsoft Edge.

Web browsers have a lot of security and privacy protections built into them which (for example) stop us from protecting you against closing your Clarinspect tab or window, or from navigating to a different website. These protections in the web browser mean we have to protect your data in a different way.

Hub Navigation in this guide refers to clicking back through links you can see within the Clarinspect web application. The links show the path you took in the hub to get to where you are - it’s best not to click backwards on them while editing an inspection.

NOTE: Some pointing devices (like mice) have a back button on them that you can accidentally tap with your thumb.

Scenarios - editing existing inspections

Below are various scenarios for how you may accidentally move away from your Edit Inspection page, and how to get your data back.

If you have clicked a link on the hub’s navigation, you will get the pop up shown below checking if you want to leave the inspection before saving.

What happens if I click Leave This Page?

Any unsaved changes won’t be saved (All edits are discarded) and you will be taken to where you clicked on the hub navigation.

What happens if I click Stay Here?

Changes stay the same, and you will stay on the inspection. If you want to keep the changes make sure you save before leaving. (Save and leave in Draft, Save and Activate, or Save and Complete

I was editing an existing inspection and closed the browser window / closed my tab before saving

If you click on the browser ‘X’ to close the tab, you can still restore unsaved data.

  1. Open up the chrome browser again

  2. Go back into the hub at hub.clarinspect.com

  3. Click into the inspection you want to restore unsaved work from

  4. Go into edit mode on the inspection

  5. A pop up will come up saying unsaved work has been restored

  1. Done!

I accidentally clicked back on the browser

If you have clicked back on the browser while editing an existing inspection or when in a new inspection, restore data by:

  1. Click the forward arrow on the browser to go back into the inspection.

  2. A pop up will come up saying unsaved work has been restored

  1. Done!

If you want to keep the changes make sure you save before leaving. (Save and leave in Draft, Save and Activate, Save and Complete)

Scenarios - editing new inspections

I was creating a new inspection and accidentally clicked back on the browser

There are steps you can take if you lose data on a new inspection created. If you have created a new inspection on the Hub and clicked back on the web browser, restore your inspection by;

  1. Click the forward arrow on the browser to go back into the inspection.

  2. A pop up will come up saying unsaved work has been restored

I was creating a new inspection and closed the browser window / closed my tab before saving

  1. Go back into the Hub

  2. Go into the Work Package you were using

  3. Click on ‘Create’

  1. A pop up will come up saying unsaved work has been restored

NOTE: Clicking on Hub links when you create a new inspection will prompt the same pop up as shown with editing draft inspections, as shown earlier in this guide.

Other Scenarios

I have two tabs open with the same inspection

Any edit made in one tab will also update the second. To keep things simple, work in the Hub with one tab per inspection type if you are creating new inspections. Also if you are editing an existing inspection, only do so in one tab.

What if I don’t want to restore unsaved data?

If data gets restored but you don’t want the changes, simply click back via the hub’s navigation and click ‘Leave this page’

Important Note

This half hour data recovery window is available because we store your current edits on the specific machine you are working on, and in the storage area for the specific browser you are using. If you go to another PC, or start a different browser, then the recovery option is not available.
